Sam Checks the Mailbox

Hello. My name is Sam.

Today I will explain checking the mailbox.

A mailbox is a small house for paper. It stands outside because the mail carrier is not supposed to come all the way into your kitchen.

Mail is what happens when someone far away sends paper to your address. Sometimes the paper is important. Sometimes the paper is trying to sell you windows. Sometimes the paper is a coupon for a place you already drove past yesterday.

First, I look out the window.

Looking out the window is not checking the mail. It is checking if the world is ready for me to check the mail.

Then I put on shoes.

Shoes are important because the driveway has small opinions.

I walk to the mailbox. This is a short trip, but it is still outside. A short outside trip can surprise you with weather, a neighbor, or a leaf that looks more active than it is.

When I get to the mailbox, I open the little door.

The little door is how the mailbox says yes.

Sometimes there is mail inside. Sometimes there is no mail. No mail is still information. It means the mailbox has been quiet all day and did not want to bother anyone.

If there is mail, I take it out.

I hold the envelopes carefully because envelopes are private until you learn otherwise. You should not wave an envelope around like it is a flag unless the envelope has given permission, which it cannot do.

I look at the front.

The front tells me who the paper thinks I am.

Some mail is for me. Some mail is for another person in my house. Some mail is for a person who used to live here and still has one foot in the catalog system.

Then I close the mailbox door.

Closing the door is important. An open mailbox looks surprised, and I do not like leaving small outdoor furniture in that condition.

I walk back inside.

The house receives the mail. I put it on the counter. The counter is where mail becomes a decision for later.

Sometimes I open the mail right away. Sometimes I let it sit there and become more official.

Either way, the mailbox has been checked.
