A porch light helps the outside remember where your house is.

Hello. My name is Sam.

Today I will explain replacing the porch light.

A porch light is a small sun that belongs to your house.

It turns on when the outside becomes too outside. This helps visitors find the door. It also helps the porch look like it has remembered its job.

For three nights, my porch light did not turn on.

The first night, I said, "That is interesting."

The second night, I said, "I should remember that."

The third night, I remembered it while already sitting down, which is a difficult kind of remembering.

So I got a new light bulb from the drawer.

A light bulb is a glass idea that screws into the ceiling and pretends to be morning.

Before replacing a light bulb, you should turn off the switch.

This is important because electricity is helpful, but it is not always polite when you touch it.

I turned off the switch. Then I turned it on again by accident to see if the old bulb was still not working. It was still not working. Then I turned the switch off again and said, "Okay."

I brought the small ladder to the porch.

A ladder is stairs that have not chosen a building yet.

I opened it carefully. The ladder made a metal sound, which is how a ladder clears its throat before letting you borrow height.

Then I climbed up one step.

One step was enough to make the world feel different. The doorknob was lower. The porch mat was farther away. The burned-out bulb was close enough to have an opinion.

I reached up and turned the old bulb to the left.

Left is the direction things go when they are leaving.

The bulb came loose. It was light in my hand, even though it had carried light for a long time.

I put the old bulb in my pocket because I did not want it to roll away and learn something hard about the sidewalk.

Then I held up the new bulb.

The new bulb was clear and empty and ready to be believed.

I turned it to the right.

Right is the direction things go when they are staying.

The bulb tightened. The porch waited.

I looked down at the switch through the front window. I had left it off, which was correct. Correct is a nice feeling, especially when you are standing on a small ladder in the evening.

I climbed down.

Then I went inside and turned on the switch.

The porch light came on.

It was brighter than I expected.

For one second, the porch, the mailbox, the driveway, and my shoes all looked like they had been chosen for something.

Then there was a sound like the house taking a very small breath.

The neighbors later said it was quick.

That was kind of them to say.

The new bulb kept shining until morning. The old bulb stayed in my pocket. My shoes stayed by the door. The ladder stayed folded on the porch because nobody wanted to move it right away.

That is replacing the porch light.

Thank you for sitting in Sam's Corner.

I hope you find your corner of the sky.
